About travel route
Zagreb - Rijeka
The route Zagreb - Rijeka is one of the most popular in Croatia. There are over 30 bus lines that drive day by day, mostly by highway, from Zagreb to Rijeka. For a 165 km long ride, it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, but the summer crowds can significantly extend this time. However, we emphasize that, during the season, they usually put additional bus lines.
During the 2-hour bus ride, the driver stops maximum 2 times. Each stop lasts between 10-15 minutes. We recommend that you use that time to drink coffee, take a walk or eat a sandwich. Additionally, prepare some coins in case you'll need a toilet.
The one-way ticket Zagreb - Rijeka costs from 6 EUR to 16 EUR. The lowest price, more specifically the ticket which costs 6 EUR, is currently offered by the Autotrans carrier. It starts its drive at 5:10 am and gets to its point destination, Rijeka, around 7:15 pm.
As we all expect, the two-way ticket is much more profitable. So, in case you're buying the two-way ticket you'll pay from 11 EUR to 25.5 EUR, depending on the chosen date and time, and your carrier. Also, depending on possible discounts. Here we don't mean standard discounts for individual groups: children, students, and retirees.
The company Autotrans, besides offering the most affordable one-way ticket, also offers the shortest ride.
If you choose to depart at 4:00 am with one bus stop you'll be in Rijeka in 2 hours, or at 6:00 am. This route costs only 1.35 EUR more than the cheapest one, or in other words you'll pay 7.15 EUR.
The longest drive, on several daily terms, is offered by the Croatia Bus carrier. Two stops, 6.5 EUR, one way ticket - is the best description of the drives scheduled for: 8:00 am, 11:00 am, 12:30 pm and 10:30 pm. For the return tickets ask the person who works at the information office.
If you have any specific concerns, such as conditions for carriage of pets and additional bus stops, or you are interested in accurate notifications, discounts, news, actions, etc., please contact your chosen carrier.

Journey Zagreb-Rijeka
This ride, which goal is to reach Rijeka from Zagreb, is 165 km long and the main part of the drive goes by highway. You'll spend on average 2 h and 29 min in the bus.
For the information, during the summer months and in the period of winter holidays, Christmas / New Year, traffic is noticeably more crowded so that the journey could be delayed and for this reason we suggest that you choose the earlier departure at that time - so you can be sure you won't be late.
Since it is a highway that is quite new and is in a good state there shouldn't be any unpleasant surprises. Clearly, this doesn't include unexpected delays affecting arrival at the destination, caused by adverse weather, car accidents, ect.
During the travel the bus stops at maximum twice. If we talk about the ride with two bus stops we are talking about one of these two combinations: Karlovac and Delnice or Vrbovsko and Fuzine. If there is only one bus stop, it is certainly in Karlovac.
Rijeka bus station
The bus station in Rijeka is situated on Zabica where you'll find: sandwich bar, bakery, two kiosks, toilets and a lot of cafes. Regardless of whether you are tired we don't recommend that you immediately settle where you left the bus. Preferably go to Riva where you'll see the Boonker restaurant / lounge bar / cafe. We suggest that you eat a sandwich, or drink coffee.
After that, go for a walk. Korzo is just five minutes away from the station. That way you'll easily find the accommodation if you haven't previously booked it.
It should be known that the Rijeka bus station doesn't have a waiting room, or wardrobe, or a toilet for its passengers. Until it is rebuilt which appears to be one of the city plans, order coffee in the nearby bar and allow yourself to be warm and dry in the otherwise often rainy Rijeka.
Bus operators information
Buses who drive on Zagreb - Rijeka route are well equipped. This means that the air conditioning cools the bus in the summer, and warms up the passengers during the winter months. It also means that you will probably be in a position to have some fun by watching a movie.
WiFi exists, but you must evaluate yourself how good it works. This service is free which means the carrier doesn't charge it extra.
Why you should travel from Zagreb to Rijeka by bus
Modern bus equippment is not the only reason why we think that the bus is the right choice. Pretty short distance, favorable one-way and two-way tickets, frequent lines and easy luggage transport. The list is really long. Anyway, it's best to compare it to other type of transport.
Personal car. If you have decided to travel by car, prepare 9.5 EUR for toll and about 15 EUR for gasoline. It's a total of 24.5 EUR.
So, when we compare it with the bus, we still notice that by choosing a car we choose to spend an average of 9 EUR more.
All right, the car's advantage is that you can listen to the music you like, stop whenever you want, etc. On the other hand, someone has to drive, right? It's a hassle. So there is no newspaper, book reading, and crossword puzzling. Just you and the highway.
Train. One way ticket price for this route is 15 EUR. The only exceptions are departures at 5:05 pm and 11:05 pm when the ticket costs exactly 1 EUR more. Specifically, 16 EUR. In this aspect, the advantage of the bus is already in view of the fact that ticket prices are considerably lower. Still not enough to pick a bus?
Pay special attention to the length of the train journey, ie the use of the railroad. You'll travel for a minimum of 3 h and 38 min, and maximum 13 h and 26 min. The primary reason for this are many train stops. But when we recall that by bus from Zagreb to Rijeka you'll spend about 2.5 hours, somehow all the reasons fall into the water.
Plane. Why not a plane? A short distance, a bus station location, cheaper bus tickets compared to a plane ... are just some of the reasons why, for example, Crnja Tours has a kind of advantage over Croatia Airlines.
